About 3 minutes without air. About 3 hours without shelter, in heat or cold that means to kill you. About 3 days without water. About 3 weeks without food. Everything in this book is ordered by that clock. Shelter comes before water because the shelter clock runs out first.
Confirm everyone in your group is safe and accounted for. Do not run. Do not broadcast. Take stock before you act. Inventory what you have right now: water, food, light, heat, medicine, tools. Make one decision: do you stay, or leave? Stay unless staying will kill you.
A shelter is heated by the body inside it, and your body puts out about as much heat as a dim bulb. It can warm a coffin-sized space. It cannot warm a room. And the heat you lose, you mostly lose downward. Lie on bare earth and the ground draws the warmth out of you by contact, all night, without tiring. Sleeping on the ground has killed more people than sleeping in the wind.
Assume every source is contaminated until you have treated it. Pre-filter through cloth. Filter again if it is cloudy. Then purify for real: a one-minute rolling boil, three at altitude. Keep dirty and clean vessels strictly apart. Hold three to four litres per person per day, with a reserve above thirty percent.
Walk your home and find the smallest interior room — the one with the fewest windows and the most walls between it and the outside. That is your warm room when the heat dies. You will not heat the house; you will heat that one small box, and your bodies will do most of it. Twenty minutes and a closet shelf, and the night the furnace quits in January you will have a plan instead of a panic.
The rest covers water, food, shelter, medical, defence, communication, community, mental resilience, off-grid power, growing food, and rebuilding. Every chapter ends with a Quick-Action Checklist, so it works as a reference under pressure — not just as a book you read once. Close the book and use the link below.
