How to Heat a Room Without Electricity (Safely, and Without Buying Anything)
Don't heat your house. Heat one small interior room, seal its drafts at floor level, get everyone off the cold floor, and let your bodies do most of the work. That is the whole method, and it costs nothing. Anything you burn indoors is optional, riskier, and belongs at the end of the list, not the beginning.
Most people get this backwards. They go looking for a heat source first and end up with a kerosene heater in a sealed living room, which is how power outages kill people who were never cold enough to be in danger. The shelter is the system. The heat source is the backup.
Why one small room instead of the house?
Because your body is the heater, and it isn't a strong one. A resting adult puts out roughly as much heat as a dim light bulb. That's enough to warm a closet-sized volume of air around you. It is nowhere near enough to warm a living room, and every extra cubic foot you try to heat is air that pulls warmth off your skin as fast as you make it.
So the room you want is the one with the fewest exterior walls and the fewest windows — an interior bedroom, a hallway with a door at each end, a walk-in closet, a windowless bathroom. A room that feels uncomfortably small is the right size. Pick it now, in daylight, not at 2 a.m. with a flashlight in your teeth.
Close every door between that room and the rest of the house. You are not trying to save the house. You are building one warm box inside a cold one.
What actually takes your heat away
Four things, and they are not equally dangerous:

The one people skip is the floor, and it's the one that matters most. Heat is lost downward far faster than into the air. You can be wrapped in blankets, sitting directly on a cold tile floor, and lose ground all night. Never put anyone — especially a child — to sleep on a bare floor. Two inches of anything underneath beats another blanket on top.
The second one people skip is the draft at floor level. A gap under a door robs more heat than a hole in the ceiling would, because that's the path the cold actually takes.
The layering rule (and the one fabric to avoid)
Three layers, in this order:
- Wicking layer against the skin — wool or synthetic, to pull sweat away.
- Insulating layer — fleece, down, wool, anything that traps still air. Loose, not compressed.
- Shell — anything that blocks wind. A rain jacket works indoors.
Not cotton against the skin. Cotton holds moisture and stops insulating the moment it's damp, and it doesn't dry. A cotton t-shirt under a coat is worse than nothing once you've sweated in it.
Which leads to the rule that sounds wrong and isn't: shed a layer before you start working, and put it back on the second you stop. Sweat is the saboteur. If you carry firewood or shovel snow in your full kit, you'll soak your insulation and then sit down in it.
Heat sources: what's safe indoors and what isn't
This is the part that hurts people, so it's worth being blunt.
Never burn any of these indoors, in a garage, or in a tent: a generator, a charcoal grill, a gas grill, a camping stove, a propane construction heater, or your car engine. They produce carbon monoxide — colourless, odourless, and it kills quietly while people sleep. Every winter storm produces a set of these deaths, and they are all preventable. A cracked window does not make it safe.
What is reasonable:
- A wood stove or fireplace with a real, intact, open flue. The best option if you have one.
- An indoor-rated propane or kerosene heater, one certified for indoor use, with a low-oxygen shutoff, used with a window cracked and never left running while everyone sleeps.
- A working CO alarm, battery-powered, in the room. If you buy one single thing after reading this, buy this.
- Candles and tealights produce a real but very small amount of heat. Treat them as light with a fire risk attached, not as a heating plan.
And the free ones people forget: hot water bottles, a pot of water heated on a safe outdoor stove and brought in, warm stones wrapped in cloth, and a lot of hot drinks. Warmth applied to the core is worth more than warmth applied to the room.
How to tell someone is in real trouble
Hypothermia moves through a fixed sequence, and the sequence is what makes it dangerous — because the worst stage feels like relief.
Clumsiness → confusion → a feeling of being warm → sleep.
Shivering is the body's furnace running. That's a good sign. The moment shivering stops and the person says they feel warm now, they are in serious danger — the furnace has lost. Someone who starts taking off layers because they're "too hot" is not getting better.
If that happens: get them out of anything damp, get them insulated from the floor, get them moving if they can move at all so their muscles make heat, and apply warmth to the core — wrapped warm bottles against the chest and armpits, or another person's bare skin under the same blanket. Warm drinks if they're fully awake. Not alcohol. Then get medical help.
One more thing worth knowing, because it changes how seriously people take a "mild" outage: most exposure deaths happen in temperatures above freezing. It doesn't take a blizzard. It takes damp, a draft, and a few hours of sitting still — which describes a great many living rooms on the second night without power.
Do this today
It takes twenty minutes and no money.
Walk your home and pick the room — fewest windows, most interior walls. Put a box or a shelf in it now holding: a foam mat or spare cushions to get bodies off the floor, two or three spare blankets, a rolled towel for the door gap, a wool hat per person, and a flashlight. Check that your carbon monoxide alarm has a working battery, or write it on the shopping list.
That's it. The night the furnace quits in January, you'll have a plan instead of a decision to make in the dark.
